Is Heavy Duty a mind virus?
|
I'm currently reading Virus of the Mind: The New Science of the Meme by Richard Brodie. Visit Meme Central for more information and to read the first chapter of the book online.
Amazon.com editorial review: "If you've ever wondered how and why people become robotically enslaved by advertising, religion, sexual fantasy, and cults, wonder no more. It's all because of "mind viruses" or "memes"."
This book could explain what I've seen and read of the Heavy Duty (and somewhat of HIT) mind set, which fits all characteristics of a mind virus. As is Mac Cultists and other people that are... Well, let us say a bit too subjective.
And no, if you are training according to Heavy Duty I'm not bashing your beliefs, Mike Mentzer or calling you a bad person. Whatever makes your mind and your body progress should be nobody's concern - keep doing it. In fact, the exact same thing can, and should, be said about volume training being a mind virus. What I am doing is stating my observations - feel free to disagree, .
Quote from the book: "From Chapter 3, you know that a mind virus, or any virus, has three requirements: a method of penetration, a way of reproducing itself faithfully, and means of spreading itself to other minds. When you have a concept or a subculture or a dogma that meets all these requirements, you have a mind virus."
Penetration:
These are actual Heavy Duty quotes: • "From the moment I started reading that first article, I knew Heavy Duty, high intensity training was the answer I'd been looking for."
• "Mike, it was as if your words came off the page, grabbed me by the throat and shook all the stupid ideas about training right out of my head."
Faithful reproduction:
Quote from the book: "A mind virus needs a way to reproduce itself faithfully - without distortion or omission. That can be accomplished in a number of different ways:
- By saying a certain set of memes is the Truth, as many religions say about their sacred texts. Why would you want to distort or omit the truth?"
These are actual Heavy Duty quotes: • "Actualize your potential in one year, with the only valid scientific approach to productive bodybuilding exercise."
• "My basic premise is that your theory is complete, fulfilled, finished, achieved as is physics, maths, chemistry. You don't see math being changed and distorted and bastardized. I will now only read, listen or see anything on resistance training if it was written by MIKE MENTZER."
• "Let me propose a question: would you rather go through life believing in something that is not true, or, would you rather have certainty about your training by learning the one valid theory of anaerobic exercise? I hope your choice will be for the truth so you can finally begin the journey of actualizing your maximum muscular potential."
Spreading:
Quote from the book: "Some of the ways mind viruses encourage spreading are:
- Programming you with a meme to the effect that teaching this to our children will help them.
- Programming you to evangelize the virus.
These are actual Heavy Duty quotes: • "From day one I trained all of my clients with Heavy Duty high intensity exercise. For the first year and a half, I built my clientele, and my reputation in a small neighborhood health club. Then I opened my own studio, and the business has grown in leaps and bounds."
• "I am a Floor Supervisor at 24 Hour Fitness in Las Vegas. I am in charge of making sure my trainers are using the best programs for their clients, amongst other things. The ideas you present on recovery ability and performing the least amount of work necessary are absolute Must Know information amongst my trainers. I encourage them to engage in scientific training and stray from "Traditional Programs"."
