INCH ‘UNLIFTABLE’ DUMBBELL

A special competition was staged at the finals of the Arnold Bodybuilding Classic. This featured an exact replica of the heaviest Inch Dumbbell. During the first half of the 20th century hundreds of strongmen accepted the challenge of Thomas Inch of England and not one of the challengers lifted the weight even an inch from the ground.

Since 1956 several have succeeded, the most notable being Henry Gray, a Scottish Highland Games athlete who did a high pull with the weight.

At the Arnold Classic Mark Henry became the first to duplicate Gray’s performance and won $1,000 for his attempt. Phil Pfister was next best. He did a single hand dead lift, then (after steadying it very briefly, with his open left hand) he pulled it to the shoulder with right hand and jerked it overhead, again using one hand only. Although disqualified from the main prize because of the hand touch and knee assistance in pulling to the shoulder Phil’s great effort encouraged Jim Lorimer to announce that Phil too would receive a $1,000 prize.
